Christie’s again set a record for the most expensive colored gemstone sold at auction in the United States with its sale of the Jubilee ruby ring on April 20, 2016 in New York.
The 15.99-carat Burmese ruby fetched more than $14.1 million at Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels sale, making it the most expensive colored gemstone sold at auction in the U.S. Christie’s disclosed that it was sold to a private European buyer.
Known as the “Jubilee Ruby,” the gem is set in an 18k gold ring within a circular-cut diamond and polished gold surround designed by Verdura.
Although rubies can be found in various countries, it is the legendary mines of Burma that have yielded the most beautiful gems over the centuries.
“Top quality Burmese rubies over 15cts are an absolute rarity in the world of colored gemstones,” said Rahul Kadakia, international head of jewelry at Christie’s.
